As the inaugural post, I feel obligated to share how I came to naming the blog – AGOG in Cyberspace. It was actually my wife who first brought the idea of using AGOG in the name. She had been searching for a word that not only described my passion for creating an Internet Presence for Clients, but also was unique. AGOG means ‘full of intense interest or excitement’. That fits the criteria. Adding Cyberspace was my idea. The term "cyberspace" was first used by the cyberpunk science fiction author William Gibson. Now ubiquitous, in current usage the term "cyberspace" stands for the global network of interdependent information technology infrastructures, telecommunications networks and computer processing systems. I agree with Chip Morningstar and Randal Farmer who said “cyberspace is defined more by the social interactions involved rather than its technical implementation.” For those of you who don’t know Chip Morningstar’s contribution to what now is known as Social Media was revolutionizing a software program used to access graphical chat room servers (palaces), in which users interact with one another using graphical avatars overlaid on a graphical backdrop.
What does this all have to do with the question – What makes a viable Internet Presence? Plenty. The one thing the most popular Internet destinations have in common is social interaction. The one thing that keeps visitors coming back to a site is interest or excitement. As an Internet Presence Consultant, my focus is on creating intense interest and excitement and enabling social interaction. The key to creating a viable Internet Presence for my clients is finding that healthy mix of content delivery and functionality. Clients typically come to our Firm to have us design and develop a website to promote their service, products, or organization. Their goal generally is to generate online sales or traffic to their place of business.
The overwhelming number of people we work with come to us with the assumption that a site with pretty graphics and easy to read descriptions of their wares will generate the results they are looking for. True. The prerequisite for a successful site is the presence of compelling and fresh content, as well as a user friendly site navigation. This alone, however, will not produce a viable Internet Presence. A viable Internet Presence includes all facets of Internet communication media: Social Networks, eMail Marketing, Blogs, Web Directories, Internet forums, and more. What’s important is to have a strategy for developing and managing as many of the Internet opportunities as make sense for your particular industry or interest. I’ll be exploring these in the upcoming Blog posts and hope my posts will solicit comments and feedback that further defines ‘What makes for a viable Internet Presence?'
